The Royal Academy of Medicine of Belgium have decided that raising children on a vegan diet is “unethical”. They say letting a child grow up vegan is “enforcing a strict diet” and Georges Casimir, who led the commission went as far as to say he “can no longer tolerate this endangerment”.
I hear those words often; unethical, enforce, endangerment. It is appalling ironic for those that choose unethical lifestyles, who knowingly enforce cruelty and pay to place innocent beings in endangerment on a daily basis think they have some sort of higher moral perspective of life than vegan parents.
Vegan parents raise their young with absolute honesty, compassion and the free will that society strips away from our young.
I have said this before and I will say it again. Taking something away from a diet is not forcing someone to do anything, however, giving your child animals to eat without them knowing what it is they are eating, is quite literally forcing something on them. Veganism gives a child the option to grow up free from an enforced meat eater lifestyle and make their own mind up and decide for themselves if they want to consume animals.
If you are a vegan parent in Belgium the diet now has to be accompanied by medical supervision, regular blood tests, and vitamin supplements. This is not only belittling but implies vegan parents are doing something wrong.
Surely if following a healthy vegan diet warrants such control and monitoring, doesn't a unhealthily high fat, animal based, fast food diet warrant the exact same scrutiny from medical professionals?
Parents who don’t follow the new rules and requirements risk two years in prison, fines, and even the possibility of their children being removed from them.
I wonder if the parents of children who are morbidly obese as a result of poor diet, suffer the same consequences if their child has diet related health issues?
Knowing that this isn’t the case and this form of child abuse isn’t recognised or punishable, I query the real reasons for this new vegan legality. It screams pharmaceutical influence to me. Hey, if we can't keep them sick, lets force them to be monitored and buy supplements from us instead, or stick them in jail!
Dawn Carr, director of PETA said “a load of ignorant codswallop...A well-planned vegan diet is perfect for babies and children”
And if you fear this is a bias opinion, please consider that the American Academy of Pediatrics say “Multiple experts have concluded independently that vegan diets can be followed safely by infants and children without compromise of nutrition or growth and with some noticeable benefits”
Still unsure? The BDA (British Dietetic Association, has affirmed a vegan diet can “support healthy living in people of all ages”.
So who are you going to believe? The British Dietetic Association or Maggie De Block who simply has the opinion that “a vegan diet is unhealthy and dangerous for infants”
